KALING: Yes. I happened to be in baseball camp, and I also ended up being terrible at baseball, that will be astonishing to most likely no body.

KALING: Yes. I happened to be in baseball camp, and I also ended up being terrible at baseball, that will be astonishing to most likely no body.

But during the end associated with the baseball camp, i obtained a — i do believe it had been an involvement trophy. And I brought it home, and I also ended up being therefore happy with it. And my mom picked it, and she was told by me, my mother, about any of it. And she stated, you don’t understand this for doing such a thing. And she, i do believe, either threw it away (laughter) or hid it away or something like that, nonetheless it ended up being very devastating for me as a young child I thought was, like, some kind of hard-earned award for my inherent goodness and just thrown it away that she had taken this — what.

But which was a very big deal you don’t deserve them for her, is awards and things, getting hooked on the feelings of awards when. And I also do not think she liked that about a complete large amount of US tradition in — like, in training because i believe there was clearly a lot of things like that growing up during my elementary college. We felt like there was clearly a complete large amount of, like, let us make everybody feel great simply for being on their own, and she would not contribute to that at all.

GROSS: Yeah. How do you reconcile exactly just just how your mother attempted to provide you with up, because of the increased exposure of, like, boosting self-esteem, and which way you think you are going to go in as a mom?

KALING: I surely think it is more important because i do believe boosting our self-esteem had not been vital that you my mom (laughter), I do not think at all. It had been not a thing that took place to her. And so I genuinely believe that, it is more important for me. It is simply parenting that is different. Like, i really do think there clearly was some value in — you understand, in praise for — you understand, like, my child can do one thing — like, she will not drop her meals on to the floor (laughter), and I also will praise her for that her to feel good about not doing those things because I want. Therefore we have actually — We have a bit of yet another parenting design than my mother by doing so. I actually do offer plenty of good reinforcement for not really doing bad things. And I also do not think she was this way.

GROSS: Mindy Kaling, it is simply been a pleasure to consult with you. I wish you health that is good this actually terrible amount of the pandemic and health to your child along with your dad and all sorts of the individuals whom you worry about.
